# How to calculate GPA

Grade point average or GPA indicates how well a student is doing at a certain educational institution. Just as the educational system varies across the globe, the method on how to calculate grade point average varies from country to country, school to school. Luckily, the basic underlying premises are the same so the steps are somehow similar.

## How to calculate GPA - By average:

The most commonly used is a four pointer scale such as A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1 and F=0.

In cases of the + and – symbols, this means that the precise points from the grade book has been factored in.

2. Collect the letter grades from different subject areas.

3. On a sheet of paper jot down the correct letter grade and point value for each using the four-point scale.

Approximately use add a 0.33 for a grade that has + and subtract it from a grade that has -. For instance, an A+ would be 4.33 while an A- would be 3.67.

5. Take the sum and divide it by the number of classes.

6. The quotient is the GPA.

## How to calculate GPA - By credits:

In some cases, some subjects get more credit than others.

The most commonly used is a four pointer scale such as A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1 and F=0.

In cases of the + and – symbols, this means that the precise points from the grade book has been factored in.

2. Collect the letter grades from different subject areas as well as the credit hours.

3. Assign the correct scale value for every letter grade like in step 3 above and write them down.

4. Multiply the credits with the corresponding scale value.

5. Add the number of credits.
