So you’ve come up with a grand idea of writing a novel. Great. You probably even have a cool concept in mind already, but somehow, you don’t know where to start. This article will teach you how to start a novel.

Step One: Plan.

The first thing you should do to start a novel is to plan and make an outline of your novel. Although some writers like to develop the plot as they write, for starters, it is advisable to think of a solid plot and ending of your novel. This process may somehow prevent the common problem of getting to a dead end.

Step Two: Know your audience and your genre.

It is necessary that you know your target audience and adjust your writing style accordingly. You should know your genre and probably read some books from your chosen genre to get some pointers.

Step Three: Know your characters.

In this step, you should create your characters and know them well. Study their personalities as if they’re real people.

Step Four: Think of a setting.

You should think of a location where the events in your novel will take place. It can be a fantasy world or a real place. You can also have multiple settings if you want.

Step Five: Begin writing.

Write your first draft. Grammatical errors or errors in technicality in your rough draft are perfectly fine. Your novel will go through a lot of editing and some of the things you wrote here may still be changed. For the first few chapters of your novel, you may want to describe your setting and introduce your characters.

Step Six: Write the other chapters.

Develop your story and characters as you write along. You can always refer to the outline that you’ve made earlier. Continue writing your novel until you reach your desired ending.

Final Words…

Writing a novel takes time but following these simple pointers on how to start a novel will make things a whole easier. Sometimes, the hardest thing in writing is to start but once you get the hang of it you will notice that things will get easier.

  1. Be original. No matter how tempting, do not pattern your novel to famous ones that you have read.
  2. Try not to be predictable. Create plot twists to keep your readers from being bored.
  3. Be creative. You can use figures of speech to make your writing style more interesting.
