How to draw anime nose

Anime drawing is not complete without the nose. Drawing the anime nose entails knowing the basics of drawing the face shape (the circle then the cross), choosing the character’s “personality” and the view of your character.

Materials

  • Clean sheet of paper
  • Pencil
  • Pen
  • Eraser
  • Coloring materials

Procedure

Decide on the basics

  • What is your character’s “personality”? Soft traits such as nice or innocent will mean a curvy nose while tough or evil will mean a pointy nose.
  • What is the view (front, side, quarter)?

The nose is the not the first feature that you draw. When you are drawing the nose, make sure you are already done with the basic face shape (circle with the cross) and the eyes.

Curvy nose

  • For the soft nose, a wide “U” works just fine.
  • You can also make a “J”.
  • Flip the nose to fit the view of your character.
  • Remember that the curvy nose is for cute and nice characters.
  • Trace with a pen with the rest of your face drawing.
  • Erase the pencil marks and color.

Pointy nose

  • A pointy nose works best for side views and serious character.
  • Make a wide check mark or a slightly curved right angle, depending on the view of your character.
  • Trace with a pen with the rest of your face drawing.
  • Erase the pencil marks and color.

Tips

  • In some anime facial expressions such as being very mad or annoyed, the nose disappears and is replaced by short diagonal lines.
  • Drawing a small slanting line or a dot will work too if following the face lines are tough for you.
  • When an anime character is shouting or crying or has a very big mouth open upwards, the nose is not seen. It is just the big mouth and the eyes.
