Division of fractions is one of the next level operations that are typically learned in primary mathematics. It sounds a little bit difficult but really, learning how to divide fractions can be done in as little as three steps.

## Dividing fraction by fraction

 1 ÷ 1 5 4

1. Turn the divisor (the second fraction) into its reciprocal or upside down.

 1 ——-> 4 4 1

2. Multiply the dividend (first fraction) by the reciprocal.

 1 X 4 = 4 5 1 5

3. Simplify the answer if necessary.

## Dividing fraction by a whole number

Dividing a fraction by a whole number appears to be trickier because the numbers look different in form. Here is how to do it:

1. Turn the whole number into a fraction by putting 1 as its denominator (the one at the bottom of the fraction)
2. Divide using the three steps above (flip, multiply,simplify)

Division is the inverse of multiplication that is why these basic steps work well with simple fractions and whole numbers. There are added steps to take for mixed fractions (such as turning the mixed numbers into improper fractions) first but the basic procedures remain the same after.
